Protection Is Best For You?
Protection Is Best For You?
Introduction
Our Graphene lineup is one of the most popular and most discussed product options that we offer. We’ve already done a few articles related to Graphene - explaining what graphene is and how it is incorporated into a ceramic coating, comparisons between our regular and advanced versions of graphene coatings, and how to wash and maintain a graphene ceramic coated vehicle. But how do you decide which type of graphene ceramic protection you should use on your vehicle? Two main factors when deciding which type of graphene ceramic protection to put on your vehicle are ease of use and durability. Comfort factor and experience level are also important to consider. We will discuss these concerns and help to take away any fears you may have about graphene ceramic protection options.
Whether you have zero experience with any ceramic products or you are a detailer that is doing several ceramic coating jobs per week, we have a graphene ceramic protection option for you. We can split our graphene ceramic protection into 3 main categories: The first category is very easy to use water-based spray-and-wipe products. The second group is a bridge between the first and third categories with graphene ceramic spray coating, where you still have a fairly easy application process with increased longevity and durability of more than a year in most applications. The third option is maximum durability with multi-year graphene ceramic coatings that require more time and effort. We’ll dive into each of these 3 groups below.
Ease Of Use: Water-Based Quick Detailers
Just like we speak with some customers that are adamant against using a machine polisher on their car, we have many customers that are very hesitant to try out a ceramic coating because they seem too complicated, or they fear they will “mess things up.” Once they use a random orbital polisher, those initial fears go away, and the same thing can be said with the easiest form of ceramic protection for your vehicle, which are spray and wipe quick detailer types of products.
We have two options in this category, Graphene CS3™ and Graphene Detail Spray™. These spray and wipe graphene ceramic protection options are the quickest and easiest method to apply a temporary hydrophobic barrier on various exterior surfaces of your vehicle. Spray and wipe products are water-based, with reduced graphene oxide added into the formula along with other polymers, lubricants, and gloss enhancers, to provide protection for 1-3 months in most cases. So in other words, ease of use is very high, but durability is much lower, so you will need to use them more frequently for continual protection if they will be your primary source of protecting the finish on your vehicle. Another benefit of spray and wipe products is that there are no curing times, meaning that you can use these products indoors or outdoors, and drive your car immediately afterward without worry. Let’s take a more in-depth look at Graphene CS3™ and Graphene Detail Spray™ below.
Graphene CS3
If you aren’t familiar with Adam’s CS3, it stands for “Ceramic Spray: (1) Cleans, (2), Shines, & (3) Protects.” It is an all-in-one spray on and wipe off product that is a top-choice for many of our customers not only because of how easy it is to use, but for the incredible gloss, slick feeling, and excellent water beading that it leaves behind on nearly all exterior surfaces of your car. We then took all of the best features of CS3 and added graphene ceramic resins into the formula to make Graphene CS3™, creating an even more durable mixture that can last up to 3 months per application. Graphene CS3™ is unique in that it can be used as a waterless washing chemical to clean and protect a slightly dirty vehicle with one chemical and several towels, saving time and effort, or it can be used as a type of spray sealant on an already clean surface. You can apply Graphene CS3™ on top of an existing graphene ceramic coating as maintenance upkeep, you can apply it on top of a wax or sealant layer to enhance their performance if they are degrading after a few months, or you can apply it as a standalone protection on a clean, bare surface - it is not exclusive to just ceramic coatings and graphene ceramic coatings.
Durability of Graphene CS3™ by itself will depend on a few factors: your driving conditions, how often you wash the vehicle, and whether it spends most of the time outside in the elements like sun, rain, and snow, or stays garaged and out of the elements most of the time. If you drive longer commutes every day and your car sits outside at work, you may want to use Graphene CS3™ every 1-2 months for constant protection, but if you don’t drive as frequently and your car is garaged, you may only need to use it every 2-3 months. The key to using Graphene CS3™ effectively though, is to have the right type and the right number of clean microfiber towels. You will want 4-6 waffle-weave Waterless Wash Towels for most vehicles to remove the initial dust and dirt. Then we recommend 1 or 2 plush towels like our Borderless Grey Towel, to make more broad, quick swipes across the surface to fix any light streaking, after you do the majority of cleaning with the waffle-weave towels. You can find a quick demonstration video on Graphene CS3™ here: Safely Clean and Graphene Protect Your Vehicle in One Product | Graphene CS3™
Graphene Detail Spray™
Some of our customers may not prefer using an all-in-one type of product like Graphene CS3™, and would rather do a traditional wash with soap and water to clean the vehicle, dry it off, and then apply a quick and easy shine and protection product. Others may find that Graphene CS3™ can sometimes be a little more effort to use on dark colors without the right towels and technique. If you are in either of these two groups, then Graphene Detail Spray™ is the solution for you. Graphene Detail Spray™ is our easiest to use graphene ceramic spray on and wipe off product for your paint, glass, chrome, and other exterior surfaces. And just like Graphene CS3™, you do not need to have a graphene ceramic coating on your vehicle to use Graphene Detail Spray™ - it can be used on coated and non-coated vehicles alike.
Graphene Detail Spray™ takes our flagship original pink Detail Spray and makes it better in all aspects. It is a water-based formula that builds upon the base Detail Spray by incorporating reduced graphene oxide resins. This takes it a step further, offering more longevity and performance per application, while making it even more compatible with ceramic and graphene ceramic coatings. Using it on your graphene ceramic coated vehicle as routine maintenance will allow the coating to perform its best with respect to hydrophobic and self-cleaning properties. Graphene Detail Spray™ can be used as a drying aid, but we recommend using it sparingly per panel and in the shade if possible when used to assist in drying. It can also be used to remove light dust from your car’s surface; however, if your car is a little more dirty from driving through a light rainstorm, for example, then our Graphene CS3™ discussed earlier would be a better choice, since it offers more cleaning ability with the lubricating agents and cleaners in its formula. Increased Durability and Easy To Use: Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™
The next option of graphene ceramic protection is Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™. Spray coatings combine the ease of our water-based graphene resin infused quick detailers with the extended
durability and the extreme hydrophobicity and water beading and repelling behavior of our multiple-year graphene ceramic coatings. Adam’s Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™ is the easiest way to apply a true ceramic coating to your vehicle that will last upwards of one year, without all of the complexity of flashing and curing times, or high spots and streaks that may occur for first time users of our 7-year Graphene Ceramic Coating™ and Graphene Ceramic Coating™ Advanced, which we will discuss in the final section of this blog. Our spray coatings are the best all-around products to apply if you are just venturing into the world of ceramic coatings.
If you are afraid to put a ceramic coating on your car because it sounds either too involved, too much work, or over-complicated, our spray coatings are the easy button of ceramic coating. Our Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™ options are solvent-based, not water-based, making them true ceramic coatings in sprayable form, but because they are at a lower percentage level of active resin and in a spray formula, they are much more forgiving, easier to work with, and take out all of the worry of the application process. You will see them “flash” on surfaces once you apply the coating with a Microfiber Applicator and it is exposed to the air, just like our coatings in the 60ml glass bottles, but due to the lower percentage of resin, they are incredibly easy to apply and wipe away, since they are not putting as thick of a layer of material onto the surface. By “flashing”, we mean that the coating will begin to have a rainbow-like appearance a few moments after it is applied to paint, glass, and chrome, very similar to how an oil slick appears on asphalt. We have two options for spray coatings: Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™ and Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™ Advanced. Let’s take an in-depth look at each below.
Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™
Adam’s Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™ is a perfect middle-ground between our less durable spray-and-wipe graphene protection and the more involved 7-year or 9-year graphene ceramic coating options. This spray coating is a solvent-based formula consisting of reduced graphene oxide interlaced into the polysiloxane (ceramic) backbone to create a protection product considerably more durable than waxes and sealants. In fact, most will say that Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™is easier to apply than most sealants or waxes on the market while offering resistance to heat, more shine, and easier washing. Our spray coating utilizes the same formula as the 7-year Graphene Ceramic Coating™ in the 60ml bottle, but at a lower concentration at 7% active resin. This allows it to be put into a spray bottle to make application much easier. You can simply mist two or three sprays into a Microfiber Applicator and have enough product to evenly and fully coat an entire door panel for example. In other words, one 12oz bottle typically allows you to apply a coating to 5 or 6 vehicles, or one vehicle 2 or 3 times per year for 2 years.
Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™ has a very long working time, meaning that once it flashes, or rainbows on the surface, it will usually take a few minutes for the residue to become clear again, which is the indication that you should then remove it from the surface with a plush microfiber towel. So even if the coating sits on the surface for 5 minutes, you will find that it is still nearly effortless to wipe away. With our 7 and 9 years coatings that we will discuss below, it’s imperative to do as much correction and prepwork as possible for the coating to bond properly and last several years - our spray coatings are for those that may not want to spend that much time and effort, and would rather reapply protection every year or so in a much easier manner.
Yes, claying, polishing, and prepping your vehicle’s paint will make it look better, allow Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™ to apply even more easily, and last longer, but if you simply want to wash your car, dry it, and apply this spray coating, you can! It’s the perfect introduction product into ceramic coatings, and can be used on nearly any exterior surface - paint, glass, chrome, plastic, vinyl, cloth tops, wheels, and more. The spray formula allows you to get into tight areas such as wheels, suspension, front bumpers and grilles more easily, then just make sure to level the areas with an applicator and wipe away excess residue from every surface with a clean microfiber towel. Then it only needs 4-6 hours free of any moisture, water, rain, etc to cure and you’re ready to go.
Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™ Advanced
Even more durable at 1-2 years of protection per application, but still nearly as effortless to use, is our Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™ Advanced. As the name indicates, this is a more advanced version of our spray coating, with double the active resin percentage at 15%. What this means is that it will allow for a thicker layer of protection on the surface while still letting it be easy to work with in terms of flash times and wiping away the excess residue. If Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™ Advanced flashes for a bit too long on surfaces, it will be slightly more difficult to wipe away the residue than the regular version of the spray coating, but you should still find it easier to wipe off than a paste wax for example. The application and removal process is the same as the normal version above; however, if you do find some difficulty in removing it from areas, such as exterior glass, you can simply reactivate the flashed coating by misting one more spray into an applicator, wiping the area with the applicator, and then immediately buffing it off with a plush microfiber towel.
Maximum Durability - Graphene Ceramic Coating™
The final grouping of graphene ceramic protection gives the maximum amount of strength, gloss, and hydrophobic behavior, and with that comes the most amount of time in terms of cleaning, decontaminating, polishing, and prepping surfaces before you are ready to apply the coating. These products are much higher concentration levels of the active formula, shipped in small 60ml glass bottles with a much more precise and thorough application process. These graphene ceramic coating options last upwards of 7 to 9 years when following proper routine washing and maintenance regimens. So if you are looking for the ultimate or best protection, easiest washing, longest lasting shine, more resistance to scratching and water spots, and less chance of bird bombs and bug splatter staining into the vehicle’s clear coat, then our multi-year Graphene Ceramic Coating™ options are for you.
As mentioned earlier, these coating options do require more time, skill, and effort to apply - as durability increases the ease of use begins to decrease since you are putting a much thicker layer of protection onto the vehicle; however, if you are hesitant to apply one of these graphene ceramic coatings to your vehicle, it’s not as difficult of a job as you may think. Adam’s Polishes offers all of the products, educational videos and instructions, and tips and techniques that you need to successfully decontaminate, machine polish, and apply the graphene ceramic coating to your vehicle, even if you’ve never held a coating bottle or used a random orbital polisher before. Part of the fun and experience is spending the time to make your vehicle look as perfect as possible, taking pride in it, and then locking in all of that hard work that you just accomplished. We have numerous videos and educational write-ups on the recommended processes to do to your vehicle prior to using the coating itself, and this can usually be done in 3-4 days time or less from start to finish.
The beauty if it is your own vehicle, is that you can work at your own pace - you don’t necessarily need to rush and do the whole vehicle in one weekend. It’s your vehicle to enjoy for the next several years, so you can clay, polish, prep, and coat two door panels one weekend or evening for example, then do the fenders and hood another week, and so on. Once you have that protection locked in on those few sections, they will be much easier to maintain afterward. Let’s take a look at our Graphene Ceramic Coating™ and Graphene Ceramic Coating™ Advanced below.
Since its unveiling, Graphene Ceramic Coating™ has been one of our top-sellers month after month, due to its incredible performance and overall ease to work with it. This graphene ceramic coating provides unparalleled levels of gloss, slickness, and water beading and repelling, keeping your vehicle cleaner for longer periods of time. You will notice that the vehicle seems less dirty after a quick drive through a small rain shower, brake dust will be far easier to clean from the wheels, and water spots will wipe off of paint and glass more easily with just a quick mist and wipe of Graphene Detail Spray™. Ceramic coatings were an evolution of technology to the detailing community, and now with the inclusion of reduced graphene oxide, it takes them a step further, creating a harder surface more resistant to scratches, tighter contact angles for water droplets (meaning they evacuate from surfaces better), and truly outstanding levels of gloss and depth to paint while providing years of protection against harmful UV exposure on paint, chrome, plastic, and other exterior surfaces.
As mentioned earlier, our 7-year Graphene Ceramic Coating™ does require more care and attention in both preparation and application. This coating will be on your vehicle for many years, and it will not hide or lessen any imperfections, so you will want to address any issues first. Using a clay bar or clay mitt to remove bonded contamination would be the first step after washing, then machine compounding and polishing will take the paint to the best of the vehicle’s potential, before finally using Surface Prep to remove all polishing oils and applying the Graphene Ceramic Coating™ itself. For a great reference on correcting your vehicle’s finish using our Swirl Killer line of polishers, make sure to review this video here: Polishing 101 | Adam's Polishes
We do recommend applying our multi-year coatings indoors, in a room-temperature environment if possible, for easiest application. Extreme temperature and humidity can play a larger factor with the flash times of these coatings than the spray versions mentioned earlier. If they flash on the surface for too short of a time, you may not be getting a full bond with the clear coat, and if they sit on the surface for too long of a time, you will have difficulty wiping them away, which can result in seeing high spots, smears, or streaks in the finish, that you will have to address and fix separately. These coatings also need to be cured indoors for a minimum of 24 hours for proper bonding to vehicle surfaces before they can be exposed to any moisture or water. The vehicle can get wet after 24 hours, but we do recommend waiting at least 5 days before doing a wash with soap and water, since the coating can still be curing a bit even after the initial 24 hour cure-time. If you do run into any issues with high spots or streaking, they can be corrected. The faster you get to these issues, the easier they will be to correct. They will be more apparent outside on a cloudy day than in sunlight or in your brightly lit garage, so be sure to spot-check your work outside if you can, fix the issues, then move it back into the garage to cure. Graphene Ceramic Coating Advanced™
Much like we have an advanced version of our Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™, we also have an advanced version of our full Graphene Ceramic Coating™, which is our most durable and longest-lasting consumer grade we have ever offered. This advanced graphene ceramic coating is our most concentrated, highest active, do-it-yourself coating, at a 45% loading level of graphene ceramic resin. To compare it to the spray coating, you can think of the 60ml Graphene Ceramic Coating™ Advanced as being a full ream of paper, whereas Graphene Ceramic Spray Coating™ would be only a few sheets of paper, in terms of how much of a layer of protection it puts on the surface. Yes, they are actually protecting the surface at the microscopic level, but this comparison shows why this advanced coating can last up to 9 years - it is a thicker and stronger layer, so it requires more abrasion over time to weaken and remove it.
Both of our “Advanced” graphene ceramic coating options utilize a different resin from the normal versions. Due to the chemical makeup of the normal versions, they must be shipped by ground transportation; however, the new resin in the advanced versions allows them to be shipped by air and overnight, since they are not flammable. This makes them more accessible for those that might be in a time crunch to work on their own vehicle, or a customer’s vehicle if you are working in a detail shop. You will find that Graphene Ceramic Coating™ Advanced can flash more quickly and require a little more effort to remove than our standard 7-year Graphene Ceramic Coating™, so make sure to test it out in a small area first (such as a headlight) to see how quickly it flashes in your environment. Once your removal towel has some tension on the surface and the coating residue feels almost like it is sticky and dragging the towel, that is a good indication that it is ready to be thoroughly wiped from the surface. If you want the ultimate, best-of-the-best protection on your vehicle, then Graphene Ceramic Coating™ Advanced is for you!
